Over 70,000 rheumatoid arthritis patients in the United States are using the drug ENBREL. The drug has only recently been marketed in the United States, although it has been available in Europe since early 2000. Enbrel (etanercept) is an anti-inflammatory prescription drug manufactured and marketed by Immunex Corp. It is prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Enbrel is effective for arthritic patients because it reduces the inflammation that patients commonly experience. It is given by injection one to two times a week. Patients can give themselves the injections at home.

Recent reports claim that Enbrel may stimulate central nervous system disorders and cause fatal blood reactions and infections. Since the drug's approval, 30 of the estimated 25,000 patients treated with Enbrel are reported to have developed serious infections. Six of these patients died within two to sixteen weeks after starting treatment.

Enbrel has also caused serious blood problems and allergic reactions (causing the following symptoms: difficulty in breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, and/or hives). Enbrel may also cause muscle pain, weakness or numbness, visual disturbances, seizures and also some psychological changes. Other less serious side effects include stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, cold, fever and other signs of infection, and headaches and swelling at the injection site.

Immunex Corp. has issued a cautionary statement about the use of Enbrel to healthcare professionals as a result of these reports. Immunex, based in Seattle, Washington, is reminding physicians of the new safety concerns and labeling for Enbrel. Enbrel was approved last November with labeling stating that it should not be given to patients with sepsis and should be discontinued if a patient develops a serious infection. Because of reports received from the FDA, the warning related to sepsis has been expanded to include warnings for any patients with any and all active infections, including chronic or localized infections.

At this time, without further controlled clinical studies, it is unclear whether Enbrel truly is the cause of the serious infections in patients with RA. However, as a precautionary measure, physicians are taking into consideration these new reports when assessing the risks and benefits of Enbrel. Patients should not take Enbrel if they have an allergy to benzyl alcohol, suffer from suppression of your immune system, have a bone marrow disease, have multiple sclerosis, myelitis, or optic neuritis or if they are pregnant women or breastfeeding.

Precautions for Patients:

• Do not start this medication if you have an infection or are allergic to Enbrel or its components.
• Tell your doctor if you are prone to infection.
• Stop Enbrel if a serious infection occurs and contact your doctor immediately.
• Inform your physician if you have been treated for heart failure.
• Contact an experienced attorney if you have taken this medication and have suffered serious side effects.

Reported Side Effects of Enbrel:

• It can cause minor reactions at the site of injection. The skin may become red, warm and tender. This effect is generally mild and doesn't require the patient to stop treatment.
• Enbrel has been shown to worsen a few cases of multiple sclerosis. In the great majority of patients the risk is greatly outweighed by the drug's benefits.
• Enbrel may affect a person's ability to fight infections.
• It is possible that Enbrel can allow a pre-existing case of Tuberculosis (TB) to re-activate. Many physicians now require that their patients are tested for TB before beginning Enbrel.
• There is a risk of serious, even life-threatening, infections in some people, especially if their immune system is already compromised. The drug should be temporarily discontinued in patients who have active infections.
